“I’ll be quite frank with you — I didn’t know about Hunger Games — so when I’m telling kids and they say, ‘Who are you playing?’ and I say Cinna, they go, ‘Oh you’re playing the gay guy.’ That was an actual answer. I’ve never brought that up yet. That’s how they perceived it. So I thought about it, and I read the book and I don’t see that he is or isn’t [gay]. He’s a designer, he’s a stylist, he has gold eyeliner—that doesn’t mean anything either way.”

Do you think you would have had the courage to volunteer as Katniss did?

"I’m trying to figure out how insulated one has to be from the wider world to be shocked! shocked! that racism is pervasive in American culture, and among American teens. Those wide-eyed tweets about Rue’s death being less sad because she’s black clearly come straight from the brains of adolescents (nearly all of them white, presumably) who have bathed in subtly and overtly racist culture since birth, absorbed far too much of it, and not yet learned to second-guess or even censor themselves when they parrot its tenets. They’re surprising only if you haven’t noticed that when real people of color are killed, there’s always an immediate attempt to justify or downplay the deaths. Art imitates life; reactions to art likewise imitate life."

— An article at Publisher’s Weekly on fans’ racist reactions to learning that Rue is black. The article also gives a shout-out to Racebending.com (via racebending)

REBLOG TO SUPPORT RUE AND CINNA

Recently the actors who play Rue and Cinna have come under attack from Racist fans of the Hunger Games. Reblog if you support the casting of Amandla Stenberg, the adorable and talented actress who plays Rue, and Lenny Kravitz, the unquestionable genius who plays Cinna.

Rue and Thresh: District 11 tributes

#the only deaths anyone in my theater cared about

This scene made me almost cry. Because Thresh looked up at her and smiled and shook his head in the most big-brotherly way. I love them both.

This Tumblr page will expose the Hunger Games fans on Twitter who dare to call themselves fans yet don’t know a damn thing about the books.

I have lots of angry feelings

I hate people so effing much sometimes.

Fuck all of these people. First of all, read the damn books, because the only black movie character who wasn’t described that way in the book was Cinna, and if you have anything bad to say about Lenny Kravitz, I’ll hunt you down. Also, I’m sorry that a few black people survived this supposed apocalypse and your racist asses can’t handle it. Seriously.
